What words in English could I use to describe such a proudly South African English mom and her toddler? Then add her Nana and Grandad ( or`Daya´), her Aunty Audrey, Uncle Mish, five dogs and two cats – we are certain to be in for a delightful morning!
I was greeted with a warm hug from a bubbly Emma – carrying her cup of morning tea, of course – and a bouncing Maggie, who was very impressed with the pink and white lollipop her Aunty Tash gave her. She looked up at me with those deep, brown, curious eyes and said `Pretty!… It´s PINK!´(Sometimes I think Maggie´s English is better than my Brazilian English!) For a two year old, she is very impressive.
The Morris home buzzes with the energy of the morning – even the dogs were excited to experience the new day, and followed Maggie around on her adventures. While Emma prepared me some tea like a perfect hostess in her kitchen, I was touched by the beautiful photographs in the family home – photographs capturing the memories of so many generations of Emma´s family, and the pride in her heritage. It was as if I could touch and feel the warmth and love in the home.
What I will remember the most about Emma and Maggie is their friendship – and how much fun they have together… Whether it was practicing ballet, trying on her hats, going to the supermarket, preparing an English breakfast or Maggie´s favorite, swimming, Emma is so gentle and engaging with Maggie. Her affection and genuine enthusiasm reflects how much she looks at Maggie with awe and wonder, as a miraculous ray of sunshine that brings warmth to everything around her.
I as a photographer, I love to shoot these types of moments, that remind me that relationships – and love – is an art. Daily moments like these are connected to the world at large, and to all of life.
Emma and Maggie, I look forward to having many more cups of English tea and breakfasts with you!
Much love,
Renata
