When Rose contacted me to document her cleansing ceremony, it was because she saw the pictures I took at this Wedding in Soweto.
I told her that this job would be more than an event for me, but a cultural experience. So, my work would be based in what she would share with me.
Rose lost her husband a year ago. And Cleasing Ceremony in the Zulu Culture, symbolizes being free as woman to date and marry again.
Everything was made with the support of family and friends. I went there twice to document the preparation and the event itself.
They were loud people in general who support each other (I could tell). People always knew what to do and where to assist, Rose never really asked anything for anyone. And believe me: it was a lot of work.
The event was a sad and joyous celebration because they have celebrated Rose’s husband’s life and who he was. He was (still is) pretty much loved people and people loved him.
So, the pictures had to translate that: joy and Rose’s personality who is always willing to give. She also love sneakers and she is a hip hop fan. As Zulu bride called Makoti she always have to wear a skirt and a doek to respect her in-laws.
The aprons was a symbol of friendship that she gave to the best friends who helped her with everything.
For the second day, I had a second eye called Tiietso (very talented south african photographer) who also went to Market Photo Workshop in Johannesburg for the Photojournalism and Documentary Photography Programme (PDP).
